Welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, well

A Clockwork Orange

There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening. The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.

This year marks the 50th  anniversary of the Anthony Burgess novel “A Clockwork Orange”. To mark the fiftieth anniversary  the International Anthony Burgess Foundation is organising a multi-disciplinary conference to examine its profound and enduring impact on literature, film, music, theatre and society.

On the other side of the Atlantic, On May 19, the Hero Complex Film Festival will welcome special guest Malcolm McDowell to talk about his memories of Burgess and reflections on a long and vivid career.

We’ll keep our eyes open and if we find any other event commemorating the writing of such an influential book, we’ll make sure to let you know everything about it in future postings.

Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest-spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I knew such lovely pictures!

Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well.

Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)

I love Ed Wood and I love Plan 9 from Outer Space. It has been dubbed “the worst movie ever made”. In this time when big Hollywood studios are trying to shove down our throats all kinds of crap, an army of Ed Woods should be creating  “the worst movies ever made” of the new century. Let’s watch Plan 9 from Outer Space to help us grow a pair.

From IMDb: “Can your heart stand the shocking facts about grave robbers from outer space?” That’s the question on the lips of the narrator of this tale about flying saucers, zombies and cardboard tombstones. A pair of aliens, angered by the “stupid minds” of planet Earth, set up shop in a California cemetery. Their plan: to animate an army of the dead to march on the capitals of the world. (The fact that they have only managed to resurrect three zombies to date has not discouraged them.) An intrepid airline pilot living near the cemetery must rescue his wife from this low-budget terror. “Can you prove it *didn’t* happen?”

Joe Coleman’s Odditorium

Joe Coleman collects artifacts relating to infamous historical events. He collects sideshow and serial killer ephemera. He collects religious artifacts that call to his obsessions with violence, with twinning, and with power. Like his art, his collection is filled with reliquaries containing the twinned power of both the sacred and profane.

Coleman’s Odditorium is one of the most comprehensive collections of weird relics from the darker side of life. His collection is so huge that most of it languishes in a storage warehouse. A few years ago, at a retrospective exhibit in Germany, the Odditorium occupied four giant floors.

If you want to know a little bit more about Coleman, read the following article from Bizarre

John Henry Mackay

John_Henry_MackayI recently discovered John Henry Mackay and reading chapter 5 of his book “The Anarchist” has allowed me to better understand things that I had in my mind but that I was not able to put into words. I find in his words what I think should be man’s true ideals and he has enlighten me as to why I just cannot swallow the ideals of socialism or communinism.

I think that as children we know these things as if by intuition. But so much ingnorance, superstitions and lies are piled up in the heads of individuals, through society and the poisonous education of family life that we are made to work against our own interests.

Let me add some quotations from the book.

Liberty is nothing but independence of one another: the possibility for each for being free in his own fashion”

I claim the right of free control over my person”… “I neither demand nor expect of the comunity a bestowal of rights, and I consider myself under no obligation to it. Put in place of the word ‘community’ whatever you wish: ‘State’, ‘society’, ‘fatherland’, ‘commonwealth’, ‘mankind’, — it is all the same”

I invite you to read the book and if you already know about Mr. Mackay and happen to live in Berlin, I recommend to check out the folowing link for a Bike tour to his grave.
