I’m happy to see the latest installment of the “Off Book” series from PBS, this time taking a look at Glitch Art. We have been going back to the subject or related topics on several previous articles: Aesthetic of FailureChiptuneThe Evolution of 8-Bit ArtAnimated GIFs and Hacking manual.

Some of the artists mentioned in the video are: Phillip StearnsScott FitzgeraldAnton Marini and Daniel Temkin.

We mentioned that the origins of the glitch aesthetic can be traced to the early 20th century, with Luigi Russolo’s Futurist manifesto The Art of Noises, the basis of noise music. The purity, pristine sound and images and perfect copies are abandoned in favor of errors and glitches. What previously would have been seen as noise: a by-product is now the star of the show.

Glitch art also overlaps other art forms like 8-Bit Art, generative art, kinetic and op art, etc. And we had mentioned a few artist that we love and that have ventured into expressing this modern view of the world. We mentioned Sergio Albiac, Max Capacity and Anthony Sneed.

There are many really good artist working with this aesthetic and it is very difficult to make justice to them all and mention every single one, I’m sure there are many that I have not even heard about yet, no matter how famous they might already be, so I apologize to them for not featuring them on this article, but I will however mention another couple.

There is the magnificent work of Notendo for example. We were also very impressed with the work of bacteriasleep that has some beautiful examples of photo and video glitch and last but no least Antonio Roberts.

Finally, let me leave you wit one tune by Slugabed that I think goes with the topic. I hope you like it:
